I've been seeing scallop recipes lately.
I've never made scallops.
I've never eaten scallops.
I wanted to try scallops.
I bought scallops at costco.
Sunday, I tried one recipe.
The recipe reviews said it was amazing.
it was ok.
It called for white wine, but I used a white Brut Champagne.
Maybe my champagne for wine swap is to blame.
I don't know the difference. Different grapes?
... or maybe I'm just not a scallop girl.
And now for an alcohol story! I couldn't find any wine or champane at Macey's.
I don't think they sell it.
I didn't want to buy cooking wine.
I heard cooking wine is highly inferior/nasty.
All I found was 2 varieties of this (below) and one Brut Champagne.

This gave me the giggles. I didn't know there was such a thing as Alcohol removed wines. It figures that it is the only stuff Maceys sells.
DOES ANY ONE KNOW THE SHELF LIFE OF WINE/CHAMPAGNE?
How long can I cook with it?
I guess I'll have to google.
Anyhow, today I tried Recipe #2.

It came out very pretty.

But it only tasted OK.
And I still have a lot of scallops left to test recipes on.
After last week's huge Challot (Challah) success, I decided to try a second recipe from the bread book. For this I purchased my first saffron. That is right, I bought the most expensive spice... in the world.
I was very excited for this recipe for
Lemon Saffron Tea Bread. Very lovely looking.

I didn't have a bunt pan (though I do have some bunt pan accessories thanks to Brett's christmas shopping ... he he he), so mine was not nearly as pretty, but it smelled pretty good in the oven.

Unfortunately, it wasn't that awesome...not nasty, but nothing to ever make again. We liked the Challah much much better. I ended up putting it into my mini-triffle bowls with homemade jam and whip cream, and that was decently good, though I doubt the leftover bread will get eaten.
MONDAY WAS A HOLIDAYand we had a lazy food weekend for the most part. Friday B's Dad and Uncle Mark came over. We ate Some Papa Murphy's take n' bake pizzas and played "Dominion" (I got this for B's birthday), and "Coliseum."
On Monday, we had some of B's cousins over ( Cameron; Austin, his wife Tracie, and their baby boy). Once again, we had Papa Murphy's and played the same two games.
I enjoy having people over. It helps me fulfill my social need, and motivates me to clean the house.
